Maundy Thursday & The Mark of a Christian

The Mark of the Christian (John 13:31-38)

The text upon which this teaching outline is based is normally assigned to Maundy Thursday. The Latin word for commandment is mandatum.

This commandment that Jesus gave was the old commandment with which Moses himself summarized the whole law, but Jesus made it new by highlighting three things: He gave this old commandment a new scope (v.34), a new standard (v.34), and a new motive (v.35). Who are we to love? How are we to love? Why

In the Hands of a Loving Father - A Devotional for Good Friday

Good Friday. What a strange designation! On this day, we remember the execution of a supposed criminal who threatened the power brokers of his society. Thus, he needed to be eliminated.

Notice the other hands that were involved in the cruel events of Good Friday. A perfectly innocent was delivered into the hands of sinners who tortured and crucified Him (Matthew 17:22-23). He was betrayed by a sinner into the hands of sinners (Matthew 26:45). With “wicked hands” (Acts 2:23)

Good Friday and the Three Truths the Cross Enforces

When the Apostle Peter discovered that Jesus would experience humiliation and suffering, he exploded, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” Then, Jesus’ offered a devastating rebuke: “Get behind me, Satan, you are a stumbling block” (16:22-23). Jesus reminded him and us that the son of man came to give His life.

This notion parts company with all other religions. The Jewish Encyclopedia quotes Psalm 22:1 in debunking the notion of a crucified God: “My God, my

When Your Flesh and Heart Fail

Sandy Ford was a year ahead of me in college. We lived in the same dorm. I admired him during our days in Chapel Hill because he was known on campus as a contagious Christian… one who took His commitment and faith in Jesus very seriously. He was a leader with a campus ministry called InterVarsity. His dad was Leighton Ford. His uncle was Billy Graham. He was handsome, athletic, godly, and seemed to have everything going for him.

He had one problem. His physical heart was de

Pursuing Peaceful Relationships

I. What does God value? God is a peace-loving God who values PEACEFUL RELATIONSHIPS.The wisdom sayings of Proverbs show us that God values peaceful relationships.God’s love for peace reflects the mutual love, respect, and communion that exists within the Holy Trinity.

Hear this strong statement from the pen of Solomon: “The LORD hates . . . the one who sows discord among brothers” (6:16,19). The one who unleashes conflicts among brothers. To let loose… The word is used of t

Caring for Your Soul in 2022

The Dangers You FaceThree Primary Forms: You are in a constant, inescapable battle against spiritual degeneracy in the following three primary forms: Unbelief of God's Word, unforgiveness of others, and unhumbled pride in what we are and have done.Rich in things, Poor in the soul. “Luxury causes great care and produces great carelessness as to virtue. Those who are much occupied with the care of the body usually give little care to the soul.” – John CalvinAfflictions: “Our...

A Presidential Address on the Bible

One hundred years ago, our President at the time, Woodrow Wilson, gave an important speech. The year was 1911. It was perhaps the last time a speech like this was ever given by an American president. It was a public address devoted completely to the Bible and its importance to our survival as a nation.

President Wilson grew up as a son of a Presbyterian minister and spent his formative years at First Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Augusta, Georgia where he learned and grew to

A Renewed Hunger for the Word of God

God has used the Book of Common Prayer and its wonderful collects (prayers of preparation) written mostly by Thomas Cranmer to enrich my own prayer life and walk with God.

The prayer written for the Sunday closest to November 16 is my personal favorite:

Blessed Lord, who has caused all Holy Scripturesto be written for our learning, grant us that we may hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest themin such a way that by perseveranceand encouragement of Your holy Word,we may

I came across an interesting quote this morning in my studies from James Montgomery Boice, in his book Foundations of the Christian Faith:

Shortly after Harvard College was founded in 1636, the trustees of the school wrote,“Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed to consider well that the main end of his life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ … and therefore to lay Christ in the bottom, as the only foundation of all sound knowledge and learn

The landscape of evangelical churches and ministries are littered these days with leaders burning out and throwing in the towel on their ministries, churches, and faith. How is it that we can stay true in our devotion to Jesus for a lifetime? Here are outlines of five talks that I recently gave to church leaders halfway around the world.

God's Fair and Glorious Gift

Believers in Jesus Christ have an unusual custom: They sing through their troubles.

This custom started early in the life of the church. In Acts 16, an angry mob in Philippi physically assaults Paul and Silas. They incarcerate them and “about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them…” (16:25).

Why did they sing through their suffering? Martin Luther’s explain the power of music for believers:

“Music is a fair and

Why do we confess our sins to the Lord?

by: Dick Cain

05/07/2021

Why do we regularly confess our sins to God in our corporate worship services? The regular discipline of confession enables us to grasp more fully the beauty and wonder of grace as we are made continually aware of the depth of our need for God’s unmerited favor.

Christopher Ash explains that we also confess our sins “to encourage self-examination that leads to daily repentance, not morbid introspection that leads to despair.” Therefore, do not let our time of confession lea...

Why do Jesus followers gather to worship God?

Here is one answer: To re-present and respond to the great story of what God has done in Jesus Christ to save sinners like us. The one word that summarizes this story is “gospel” which means good news. There is a distinct gospel structure to every part of our worship service:Adoration: We adore and praise God for His greatness and grace. Today we praise our Lord for being our Shepherd.Confession: We acknowledge our sin and need for the Lord’s grace. Like Isaiah says, “All ...
